Single-Vehicle Crash Slows Traffic On Highway 51

Updated: 3:03 pm CDT June 22,2009

A 20-year-old Stoughton man and his 2-year-old son suffered only minor injuries when their vehicle rolled over on Monday morning on U.S. Highway 51, near County Highway B, in the Town of Pleasant Springs.

Dane County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the area at about 10:45 a.m.

Authorities said that Rodney Lemon was driving his Ford Explorer northbound on Highway 51. He briefly turned toward the back seat of the vehicle to tend to his child, who was buckled in a car seat, and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle rolled over about four to five times, ejecting the child, who was found afterward by his father standing in the road.

Father and son were both transported to University of Wisconsin Hospital by Stoughton EMS, where the child was admitted for observation.

Authorities said that based on the preliminary investigation, the child was buckled into a car seat, but it might not have been properly installed.

Deputies said that Lemon will be cited for operating while suspended, causing injury while suspended and failure to maintain control.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the crash.
