MY DESK: MADISON -

Our entry comes to us from Sandy Chalmers, the head of Wisconsin's Consumer Protection Division within the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). They have wonderful tools to help keep consumers safe and I'd encourage you to visit their website where you'll find them (http://datcp.wi.gov/Consumer/Consumer_Protection/index.aspx)

As an aside, I think it's kind of cool that the head of Consumer Protection is a fan of The Spam Report, but I digress.

The email purports to be from a Charles F. Feeney who has randomly chosen the recipient to receive $1.9 million. Feeney is real. The Atlantic Philanthropies is real. However, this email is not.

To quote my colleague Susan Siman, "There's no such thing as free money." Or to put it differently, as my father, who grew up in the Depression liked to say, "Don't take any wooden nickels."

This is a "wooden nickel," folks. This isn't legitimate.

As Sandy pointed out in the email she sent me, the actual charity, The Atlantic Philanthropies, has posted a few different versions of this scam email that's being sent around. You can see them all here: http://www.atlanticphilanthropies.org/news/alert-beware-email-scam-claiming-be-atlantic-or-charles-feeney

Anyhow, here's the full email that Sandy sent me. It's going to lead to a consumer alert from the government here in the near future.

Feel free to send me any scam/spam emails you want to share with your neighbors: aschrager@wisctv.com and then, just hit delete.

Have a great day and thanks for helping out, Sandy.

Hi,

My name is Charles Francis Feeney, a philanthropist and the founder of The Atlantic Philanthropies, one of the largest private foundations in the world. I believe strongly in 'giving while living.' I had one idea that never changed in my mind -- that you should use your wealth to help people and I have decided to secretly give USD 1.9Million to randomly selected individuals worldwide. On receipt of this email, you should count yourself as the lucky individual. Your email address was chosen online while searching at random. Kindly get back to me at your earliest convenience, so I know your email address is valid.
