Updated: 5:49 pm CDT September 1, 2010

Five area police departments announced Wednesday that the records management systems they use will now be able to provide the public with online access to information on police incidents, including crimes, traffic crashes and traffic enforcement.

The police departments of Sun Prairie, Middleton, Fitchburg, Verona and Monona are providing the information on websites.

Also available will be Department of Transportation reportable accidents that have occurred in the respective communities.

The police departments said the new records feature was developed so that citizens can have easier access to information when needed.

System data will be updated as soon as possible, however, traffic accident information will generally not be available for a period of five days, police said.

Police said instructions for obtaining electronic accident information can be found at the following site(s). People can view the "Help" tab for instructions, if needed.
