Patchwork Of Transition Schedules Likely Result Of Delay

MADISON, Wis. -- President Barack Obama is expected to sign a measure delaying the Feb. 17 deadline to transition from analog to digital TV after lawmakers in the U.S. House followed the Senate and voted for the delay.Despite Congress postponing the mandatory transition to digital TV to June 12, stations still have the option of dropping analog broadcasts early.WISC-TV is planning to make the switch to a digital signal on Feb. 17.Lawmakers agreed to push back the original date, concerned that many households are not prepared for the switch. They were also mindful that a government fund subsidizing digital converter boxes for older TVs has run out of money. While dozens of stations, such as WISC-TV, plan to make the switch as originally planned, many others are on the fence. The FCC estimates that hundreds of stations will make the early switch out of the country's 1,796 full-power TV stations.
