Audit: UW Campuses Should Do More To Protect Private Data

Report Says Some Campuses Have No Computer Security Officers

UPDATED: 1:40 pm CDT April 4, 2008

An audit said that University of Wisconsin schools should do more to protect the vast amount of personal data stored in their computer networks.

The report said that some smaller UW campuses don't have computer security officers and recommends they hire one to make sure the issue gets attention.

The report also said that some campuses don't have written policies that identify specific types of data that need more protection or outline how to respond to security breaches.

Schools have put considerable efforts into protecting confidential data, but doing so is a never-ending process. The audit said that UW campuses will need to pay more attention to the issue because of the increasing number of threats.
