George Johnson

George Johnson comes our way from the East Coast where he lived, attended college and worked in the Washington, D.C., area since the late 1980s.

After growing up in Pittsburgh, George's parent moved him to Bethesda, Md. (a suburb of D.C.). After high school, George attended the University of Pittsburgh, before transferring to Howard University where he would receive his B.A. in broadcast journalism. Before graduating from Howard, George became an intern, and eventually did on-air work for a regional cable network called Home Team Sports. Upon graduation, he was hired as a full-time producer for the network.

At HTS, George was responsible for producing live college football and basketball events. He also produced pregame shows featuring the NBA's Washington Bullets, the NHL's Washington Capitals, the NFL's Washington Redskins, and MLB's Baltimore Orioles. George also worked as a play-by-play announcer for college football and basketball, and hosted a half-hour show called the college basketball report.

While at HTS, George became a freelance announcer for Black Entertainment Television. At BET, George hosted their studio halftime reports, did sideline reporting, and eventually provided a daily sports cast. Eventually, George became a freelancer, maintaining his ties to both HTS and BET.

In 1998, George moved to Norfolk, Va., where he began working at WTKR-TV, the CBS affiliate. While serving as an anchor and reporter for the station, George still maintained his freelance ties. He still provided college football play by play for BET, and served as the HTS sideline reporter for the Washington Wizards.

Three years later, George was back in D.C. working with Comcast Sportsnet. There he became the studio host for several pre- and post-game shows involving the Wizards, Ravens and Orioles. He also anchored and reported for the nightly evening sportscast.

George left Comcast Sportsnet in 2004 to pursue his aspirations at doing play-by-play on a more consistent basis, doing both football and basketball.

After of year of missing his love for studio work, he finds himself in Madison.
