Madison police are still looking for the hit-and-run driver who hit a pedestrian on Cottage Grove Road on Tuesday night.

John Gesinski
John Gesinski, 63, was hospitalized with serious head injuries, but died Wednesday morning. He was walking from a grocery store on Cottage Grove Road shortly before 5 p.m. and crossing in the crosswalk at Vernon Avenue when he was hit by a vehicle that had turned north on Vernon Avenue from westbound Cottage Grove Road, police said. The vehicle continued northbound on Vernon Ave. and was found a couple blocks away, but the driver had left the vehicle, police said.

Police said they are looking for Christian Garcia-Morales, 24.

Gesinski, who was sight impaired and legally blind, served as an accompanist with the UW dance program for at least 28 years.

"It's horrible," said Karen McShane-Hellenbrand, a dance instructor who worked with Gesinski. "He didn't deserve this kind of demise."

Dance program spokeswoman Doreen Holmgren said Gesinski was known for his professionalism and punctuality, which raised concerns when he didn't show up for class Wednesday.

"Everyone's kind of shell-shocked," she said.
