Verona, Madison LaFollette and Madison East high schools all used top performances from their pitchers to help them get to the second round of the WIAA girls' softball playoffs Tuesday.
The first day of games for Division 1 schools in the girls' softball tournament was Tuesday.
In Verona, the Wildcats hosted Monona Grove. In the first inning, the Wildcats were threatening, but Emmi Janisch lined one to Monona Grove second baseman Alyssa Meyers, who caught it for one out and then stepped on second for the double play -- all by herself.
But Monona Grove couldn't solve Verona pitcher Emma Ray. She allowed only one run and Verona won it, 5-1.
They'll play Baraboo on Thursday.
In La Crosse, Madison East's girls softball team visited La Crosse Logan. The Purgolders enjoy the journey to the west as pitcher Miranda Morrison shut down the Rangers. Morrison leads the East Siders to the second round in a 4-1 victory.
The Purgolders play at Sun Prairie next.
Madison LaFollette got off to a good start with a 7-0 win over Tomah as sophomore pitcher Nicole Newman fired a one-hitter. Eighteen of the 21 outs were strikeouts.
