Portage wins WIAA Division 2 baseball title
Portage's top three hitters scorde six runs
Portage High School has won their second state baseball title after they beat Ellsworth 8-3 to win the WIAA Division 2 championship Thursday in Grand Chute.
The Warriors scored six runs in the first two innings, and then used three pitchers to combine to get the victory.
"It feels great," said Portage coach Mike Hemming. "Unbelievable feeling right now. The kids just played a great game. They got off to a great start."
That start came from some good hitting. Adam Bortz got an RBI single in the first inning, driving in Brady Greene.
Matt Bortz also helped lead the charge in the second with an RBI single to bring in Travis Hamilton.
Pitching and defense helped the lead stand up.
"And we've always felt we've got a great defensive team," said Hemming. " (We) made the plays late in the game, and hey, state champs. We always felt that we keep battling and battling we got guys that can get the job done."
Adam Bortz gets the win for three innings of work. Portage finishes the year at 22-6.
