Tony Granato named Olympic assistant

Former Badger will coach USA in Sochi

MADISON - Granato, currently an assistant coach with the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, was a two-time All-American at Wisconsin and sits fourth all-time as a Badger with 220 points in his four-year career (1983-87).  

He was also inducted into Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.

Granato spent three seasons as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche (2002-04, 2008-09) during his six years with the organization.

That followed a 13-year NHL career with the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.

Granato becomes the first Wisconsin alum to serve as a men's hockey coach at an Olympics. Former Badger Mark Johnson.was head coach of the US women's team that won the gold medal in the 2010 games in Vancouver.
