Price wins first of season as Rays top White Sox
Rays salvage split of four-game series
Rays 8, White Sox 3: Matt Joyce and Jose Lobaton hit home runs and Ben Zobrist added RBI singles in the eighth and ninth innings as visiting Tampa Bay salvaged a split of the four-game series.
David Price (1-2) struck out nine and limited Chicago to three runs on six hits over seven innings to earn his first win. The Rays put the reigning Cy Young Award winner in position for the win when they broke through against reliever Nate Jones (0-2) in the eighth.
Sean Rodriguez led off the inning with a single, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Zobrist's sharp single up the middle to make it 4-3. Jesse Crain appeared to have the White Sox out of the inning with just a one-run deficit, but right fielder Alex Rios misplayed Ryan Roberts' fly ball to allow two unearned runs.
Adam Dunn's RBI single in the first gave the White Sox an early lead, and after Lobaton tied it with a shot to right in the third, Chicago regained the lead on Paul Konerko's two-run blast in the bottom of the inning.
The Rays pulled even again on Joyce's two-run blast to right, and that's where it stayed until Tampa Bay broke it open in the eighth and tacked on two in the ninth on Zobrist's second run-scoring single and Evan Longoria's RBI double.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rays P Jeremy Hellickson was ejected by home plate umpire Tom Hallion following the seventh inning, apparently for comments made from the dugout after Hallion and Price exchanged words. … White Sox INF Jeff Keppinger (back spasms) missed his third consecutive game and Rays C Jose Molina sat out with a bruised quadriceps. … Chicago RHP Dylan Axelrod was charged with three runs on four hits over six innings, but did not factor in the decision.
