Prep Mania Team of the Month: Oregon Girls Soccer
Panthers hope team can earn 1st trip to state this year
The first girls soccer state rankings are out this week and some might be surprised that Oregon is the top local ranked team in division one. The Panthers hope that that is a sign they can become an elite program and perhaps earn its first ever trip to state.
"It's definitely nice to be recognized, Oregon is not well know in the soccer community. We have depth with this team and we knew coming into the season we had a lot of potential," said Julie Grutzner, in her 8th season as head coach for the Oregon girls soccer team.
The Panthers are ranked 6th in the state. They have 18 returning letter winners including 12 seniors.
"Last year we were moving up and we were like "oh lets get (Madison) West" and I feel like oh now we are up there with them people trying to get us too and that feels good for me and i know it feels good for the team," said Sophomore Kelsey Jahn.
Grutzne adds, " My first year we lost to west 8 nothing now we can compete with them and we beat them last year."
The Oregon boys made it to state in the fall, so the girls would like make it a Panther sweep.
"The guys have been teasing us at school. The school is kinda talking about it they are excited for us," said Senior Sarah Jacobs.
The Panthers have a loaded regional with the likes of West, Memorial and Waunakee but the tough road to state would make it worth it.
"It's gonna take a lot of hard work but I think we are up for the challenge," said Jahn.
Jacbos adds, "Soccer is just something I really love and I love my teammates and we can do it together."
