Nick Bennett has been named assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
"We're excited to welcome Nick to the UW-Whitewater basketball family," UW-W head coach Pat Miller said. "He brings great experience as a player, winning national championships in our league. In addition, he has an outstanding coaching resume with stops at Marquette University under Tom Crean, as well as Florida Golf Coast and Texas Pan American.
Most important, Nick is a quality individual with a tremendous basketball pedigree who will bring extraordinary values and experience to our program," added Miller.
"I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with one of the top basketball coaches in the country, at any level", Bennett said.
Bennett was the captain of the 2004 and 2005 UW-Stevens Point teams that won NCAA Division III championships. He was a first team All-WIAC pick both years, was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2004 NCAA III tournament, and added All-America honors from D3hoops.com and the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 2005.
Bennett began his coaching career at UW-SP, serving as a graduate assistant for the Pointers for the 2005-2006 season.
He moved on to Tom Crean's staff as graduate assistant director of basketball operations for 2006-2007. In July 2007 Bennett took an assistant's position at Florida Gulf Coast University, where he was involved in all facets of the program.
In September 2010 he was named an assistant coach at the University of Texas Pan American, where he worked as the recruiting coordinator, lead scout, and academic coordinator as well as working with player skill development and on court duties. He contributed to a staff that boosted UTPA from seven wins in 2010-2011 to eleven in 2011-2012 and sixteen in 2012-2013.
His father, Jack, directed UW-Stevens Point to national prominence. His uncle, Dick, had successful tenures at UW-SP, UW-Green Bay, and UW-Madison. His cousin, Tony, is the head coach at the University of Virginia.
