Memorial's Smith winning on and off the court

Sophomore hitting clutch shots for #2 ranked Spartans

MADISON - Madison Memorial basketball player Shareef Smith is only a sophomore, but he's growing up very quickly on and off the basketball court.

This season, Smith hit game winning three point shots in the final seconds to win games against Sun Prairie and Middleton.

Smith says, "when I make shots like that, I think I can do it again." Coach Steve Collins adds "that says a lot when you have the seniors passing to the sophomore for those shots."

A year ago, Smith was struggling in the classroom but has improved his grades to keep himself eligible.

He's also been dealing with the recent death of his grandmother, but his teammates have been helping him through a tough time..

"They know I'm dealing with stuff off the court, so they keep me up on the floor.," Smith says. "When I make a bad pass, they know what I'm going through."

Collins adds, "to face things on the court and off the court, that's a kid you want to go to battle with for sure."

Madison Memorial hosts Sun Prairie in the Prep Mania Game of the Week Friday night at 7:30 on and TVW, Channel 14.
