Marquette defeats Georgetown in overtime

Big second half comeback spurs Golden Eagles

WASHINGTON, DC - Todd Mayo hit a three-point shot with eight seconds left in regulation to force overtime and John Dawson scored seven points in the extra session to give Marquette an 80-72 win at Georgetown Monday night.

The Golden Eagles trailed 60-53 with 3:07 left, but battled back behind a basket and two frree throws by Devante Gardner to get to within three before Mayo's dramatic three-pointer to tie the game, 65-65 and force overtime.

Dawson made a jumper to give Marquette the lead, then after Gardner scored a basket, Dawson made a three-point shot to give the Golden Eagles a 72-65 lead and send them on their way to the win.

Gardner led Marquette with 20 points while Steve Taylor, Jr. added 14.

Markel Starks had 28 points and D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera had 24 to lead Georgetown.

With the victory, Marquette is now 11-8 overall, 3-3 in the Big East. Georgetown is 11-7 overall and 3-4 in conference.
