The Miami Marlins placed right-hander Henderson Alvarez on the disabled list Friday because of shoulder inflammation.

After throwing a no-hitter last year, the 24-year-old has proved to be one of the best pitchers in the National League this season. Alvarez is 8-5 with a 2.48 ERA and an NL-leading three games in 22 starts this year. Only Clayton Kershaw, Adam Wainwright and Johnny Cueto have a lower ERA in the NL.

Now in his fourth year in the majors, Alvarez has a 23-28 career record with a 3.76 ERA for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Marlins.
