The Madison Mallards finally got their 2014 Northwoods League season underway by splitting a doubleheader with Kalamazoo at Warner Park Wednesday night.

The Mallards and Growlers were originally scheduled to open the season Tuesday night, but heavy rains forced a postponement and two seven-inning games in a doubleheader Wednesday.

In the first game, Mallards starting pitcher Christian Taugner went five innings allowing only one hit in getting the win in a 6-2 victory. Ben Naumann pitched the last two innings allowing two runs on four hits.

Kalamazoo committed four errors and walked eight Mallards batters. Centerfielder Alex Bacon went had a single, an RBI and scored a run to pace the Mallards offense.

The Growlers won the second game 6-5, scoring all their runs in the second inning.
