Portage's Sam Elsner going to great lengths

Discus thrower is ranked nationally

PORTAGE - Portage High School's Sam Elsner says he's hoping to break the state record in the discus this season, and the way he's going, he might have a chance.

Elsner has broken school record a number of times this season - his latest was a toss of 186 feet, 9 inches at the Oregon Relays last Friday.

That's the second longest throw in the state this year.  Only Beaver Dam's Riley Budde has gone further - 189 feet.

Elsner competed in the WIAA State Track and Field Meet last year and finished seventh. This year, he's even more committed to succeeding.

"A lot of commitment with drills and in the weight room for sure, " Elsner said. "I go out if it's snowing, rainy, windy, cold-- I go out no matter what."

His coach, Sean Stout, says "sometimes greatness has a one-track mind. He puts everything he has into being a great thrower and that's admirable.

Elsner is ranked in the top 10 throws by a high school athlete in the country this season.
