MADISON, Wis. - Shareef Smith hit a three-point shot as time expired to give Madison Memorial a 62-60 win over Middleton in Big Eight boys basketball Thursday night.
Memorial led for most of the game, but with 10 seconds left, Middleton's Luke Schafer stole a pass and made a layup to give the Cardinals a 60-59 lead.
Middleton fans stormed the court, thinking the game was over. But two seconds still remained on the clock and the court was cleared for the deciding play.
Jester Weah inbounded to Smith, who calmly made the game-winning basket. Earlier this season, Smith hit a three-point shot in the final seconds to give Memorial a win at Sun Prairie.
It was the 19th straight win for Madison Memorial over Middleton in boys basketball. The Cardinals haven't beaten the Spartans since 2005.
