Verona beat La Crosse Central 1-0 in nine innings, and Madison Lafollette beat Middleton 2-1 Tuesday night in sectional semifinals. Verona and Lafollette will meet Thursday with a trip to state on the line.
The Wildcats and the Red Raiders needed extra innings. In the ninth inning Verona had a runner on third with one out.
Verona's Leslie Banzhaf hit one to left and it was in foul territory, but the Central's Kaitlyn Roesch made the catch in foul territory allowing Alyssa Erman, the runner on third, to tag up and score the running run.
As for the Middleton-Lafollette game, it end in controversy.
In the fifth inning a Middleton double play ended the inning, but before the play in the bottom of the seventh, it was decided the run on a sacrifice fly should have scored, so they awarded the run and Lafollette won 2-1.
Verona and Lafollette play in Middleton, of all places, Thursday at 5 p.m.
