The Kansas City Chiefs will send a franchise-record 10 players to the Pro Bowl thanks to the addition of two players as alternates Monday.

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith will replace New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who passed on the all-star contest after his team lost Sunday in the AFC Championship Game. Kansas City linebacker Derrick Johnson will substitute for the San Francisco 49ers' NaVorro Bowman, whose knee was badly injured Sunday in the NFC Championship Game.

Kansas City's other Pro Bowl players are running back Jamaal Charles, punt returner Dexter McCluster, linebackers Justin Houston and Tamba Hali, cornerback Brandon Flowers, safety Eric Berry, defensive tackle Dontari Poe and offensive tackle Branden Albert.

Smith is headed to the Pro Bowl for the first time, while Johnson is a Pro Bowler for the third year in a row.

In his first season with the Chiefs after being traded by the 49ers, Smith completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 3,313 yards with 23 touchdown passes and seven interceptions.

Johnson posted team highs with 4.5 sacks and 110 tackles.

In other Pro Bowl news Monday:

--Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray was selected as an injured replacement for 49ers running back Frank Gore. Murray, headed to his first Pro Bowl following his third season, finished with 217 carries for 1,121 yards and nine touchdowns in 2013.

--Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus earned his first berth in the game. He replaces injured 49ers defensive tackle Justin Smith. Dareus recorded personal bests with 7.5 sacks and 71 tackles this season.

--Cleveland Browns safety T.J. Ward will substitute for injured Pittsburgh Steelers veteran Troy Polamalu. Ward, heading to his first Pro Bowl, made two interceptions and recorded a career-high 129 tackles this season.

--Two Chicago Bears, rookie guard Kyle Long and cornerback Tim Jennings, are headed to Hawaii. King takes the spot of San Francisco's Mike Iupati, who broke a bone in his right leg Sunday. Jennings, a two-timer Pro Bowler, is substituting for outspoken Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, who will miss the game while preparing for the Super Bowl.

--New York Jets center Nick Mangold will replace Seattle center Max Unger. Mangold is headed to his fifth Pro Bowl. Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie will join Mangold in Hawaii, replacing injured Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib.

--Carolina Panthers left tackle Jordan Gross will sub for injured 49ers tackle Joe Staley. Gross will be appearing in his third Pro Bowl.

--Seven of eight 49ers picked for the Pro Bowl are expected to miss the game. According to the San Jose Mercury News, linebacker Ahmad Brooks probably will be San Francisco's lone representative.

The Pro Bowl will be played Sunday at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.
