Big Ten Football Media Day: Wisconsin kicks off season
The Badgers stepped up to the microphone and unofficially kicked off the football season in Chicago Wednesday.
Media from all over the Midwest and the country are in the Windy City for the annual Big Ten Football Media Days.
New head coach Gary Andersen, senior linebacker Chris Borland, senior wide receiver Jared Abbrederis and senior running back James White represented the Badgers.
Sports Director Jay Wilson caught up with the first year head coach to get his take on his first Big Ten Football Media Day.
Jay: Well, Gary is this like media day at Utah State?
Gary: Uh, no; a lot more cameras, that is for sure.
Jay: Do you feel like you are a Big Ten coach now?
Gary: Ya, I do. I feel very comfortable. You go through the time and the change and a lot of different pieces to the puzzle, but I feel like this kinda kicks off the season for us. It's exciting for you, it's exciting for me. Here we go! It's exciting for the fans. We get to start doing things like coaching football. I am really looking forward to walking out on that practice field and coaching football and preparing to play games in the Big Ten.
Jay: You have been around seven or eight months and you have had spring and you have had the summer, but do you really get to know your team in a fall camp setting?
Gary: Yes, I think you do. It is always a bigger stage, as you are building yourself up, as you are building up to the real games, and spring football is so important and all three quarters from winter condition to spring conditioning from spring ball to summer ball, it's so important, but the fall is the fall. It's so important. It's the fourth quarter for a reason --that is when you win games and that is when you play games and fall camp. We have to have 28 really quality practices, as good as we can possibly get. We are never going to be perfect, but early on, those first seven days I think are invaluable for us as far as identifying and doing a great job as coaches of giving young men an opportunity to compete.
The Badgers start camp Monday Aug. 5.
