MADISON - Corey Clement topped 100 yards in his Badgers debut Saturday against UMass. In doing so, he became the first true freshman to run for over 100 yards in his debut since the NCAA allowed freshman to play varsity football back in 1972.
"I was proud of the way he played" Gary Andersen said Monday.
Backfield mate Melvin Gordon agrees.
"He just brings a lot of energy."
Clement also scored a touchdown. It wasn't all good though, as the freshman fumbled late in the game; something Coach Andersen says is a "learning tool."
"It's easy to squeeze that ball on snap number one, but when it's snap number seven, and you're breathing hard, it's a lot harder to hang on to it."
Overall, a good start for Clement.
