A strong wind off of Lake Mendota didn’t stop the Wisconsin softball team’s offense Sunday afternoon, as the Badgers used a pair of home runs to power past Ohio State, 4-2, at Goodman Diamond. The victory capped off Wisconsin’s weekend Big Ten Conference three-game sweep of the Buckeyes.
Wisconsin’s (33-9 overall, 10-5 Big Ten) first hit of the day was a big one, as Mary Massei lined a ball straight over the center field fence in the third inning to give the Badgers an early 1-0 advantage.
Ohio State (27-17, 6-9) tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk followed by a double to knot the score 1-1.
The Badgers didn’t stay down for long, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Massei led off the frame with a walk and Kendall Grimm followed with a single to set the table for Whitney Massey. One swing by Massey sent the ball over the left field fence and gave the Badgers a three-run lead.
The Buckeyes plated a run in the top of the seventh inning, taking advantage of a Wisconsin error, but couldn’t get closer than the final margin.
Meghan McIntosh recorded her 13th complete game of the season, pitching all seven innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out six.
Alex DiDomenico suffered the loss for the Buckeyes, pitching 5.2 innings. She allowed four runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three.
Wisconsin continues Big Ten action at Goodman Diamond on Wednesday, April 24, when it hosts Northwestern. First pitch of the opening game in the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
