MADISON, Wis. -

Wisconsin football head coach Bret Bielema said Maryland’s entry into the Big Ten conference opens opportunities for more recruiting on the East Coast.

Maryland officials announced the move from the Atlantic Coast Conference Monday afternoon.  It is the 13th member of the Big Ten.

Bielema said Wisconsin was already scheduled to play Maryland in coming years because it was an attractive opportunity for recruiting.

“It allows kids to go back home and play,” he said.  “Right now our only true home game is Penn State, so it will give us two more opportunities to sell.”

Rutgers is expected follow suit by Tuesday, departing the Big East and making it an even 14 in the Big Ten. The move for both schools is not expected to take effect until 2014.
