Interim University of Wisconsin - Madison Chancellor David Ward and athletic director Barry
Alvarez issued a statement Monday saying the sanctions of Penn State are appropriate given the gravity of the circumstances.
They say all universities must never lose sight of the shared intuitional responsibility to act with openness and integrity.
"This is obviously an extraordinarily serious and sad situation,” said the statement from Ward and Alvarez. “We believe that the sanctions announced earlier today by the NCAA and the Big Ten Conference are appropriate, given the gravity of the circumstances.”
"We remain hopeful that the pain and suffering endured by the victims in this case will not go unheeded,’ said the statement from Ward and Alvarez. “We must find ways to learn from the mistakes of the past, and we must never lose sight of our shared institutional responsibility to act with openness and integrity."
With the 111 wins vacated, the last official win for coach Joe Paterno will be the 1997 game against Wisconsin. Penn State won that game 35-10 and the Penn State quarterback that day was Mike Mcqueary. Mcqueary became a Penn State assistant coach who testified he witnessed a sexual abuse incident involving Jerry Sandusky.
