MADISON, Wis. - Last summer, UW Hockey player Brittany Ammerman took a women's studies trip to Kenya. There, her and fellow UW students taught women healthy lifestyle choices, despite their harsh living conditions.
Ammerman returned from Kenya over a year ago, but still wanted to help out the women who impacted her during her trip.
"I just fell in love with Kenya and the women's health part of the trip."
Ammerman got to work. She fund raised enough money to supply balls, shoes, and uniforms for a women's soccer league in Kenya.
"I still wake up some mornings and say 'I can't believe I'm heading a women's soccer league in Kenya.'"
The league kicked off June 14 and Ammerman is already working on ways to expand the league in the coming year.
"There were a lot of smiles and some tears after the game ended. Seven more tribes want in."
Ammerman wants to add seven more teams to the two-team league. The goal is to return to Kenya and have a soccer tournament in 2015.
