Tolzien living Super Bowl dream
Former Badger QB is third stringer for 49'ers
Former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Scott Tolzien probably won't get to play in the Super Bowl on Sunday, but he's enjoying his ride to pro football's biggest game.
Tolzien is the third string quarterback for the San Francisco 49'ers behind Colin Kaepernick and Alex Smith.
"It's been an awesome experience," Tolzien said. "I mean, I'm still pinching myself in a lot of ways. It's my second year in the league, and there are guys who play 10 years in this league and never get a sniff of the playoffs, much less the Super Bowl, and so I think, more than anything, you never want to take it for granted and you just want to appreciate the whole experience."
In 2010, Tolzien was the Badgers' third-string quarterback but won the starting job in pre-season camp. He then led Wisconsin to the Big Ten Championship and a berth in the Rose Bowl.
He wasn't drafted by the NFL, but signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Chargers. The 49'ers eventually picked Tolzien up on waivers and he's been with San Francisco the last two seasons.
Tolzien said his experience with the Badgers has prepared him well for the NFL.
"Everyone was fortunate to play in the Wisconsin program. We all have an advantage going into the NFL just because (with) Wisconsin's program there was always a 'work first' deal and nothing changes at this level; if anything, it's more so," he said.
