Forward Darren Helm has agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings worth $8.5 million, the team announced Tuesday.

Helm, 25, had nine goals and 26 points in 68 games for the Wings this past season.

Helm would have become a restricted free agent July 1.
