Stars 3, Avalanche 2: Ray Whitney scored twice and Colton Sceviour snapped a tie with 2:52 remaining in the third period as host Dallas earned a split of the home-and-home series.
Alex Chiasson recorded a pair of assists for the Stars, who defeated the Avalanche for the first time in four meetings this season. Dan Ellis stopped 25 shots and also notched an assist.
Matt Duchene and defenseman Erik Johnson each registered a goal and an assist for Colorado, which had its three-game point streak halted. Jean-Sebastien Giguere finished with 25 saves as the Avalanche allowed Dallas to score more than two goals for the first time in the season series.
Colorado took an early lead as Duchene fired a rebound past Ellis from the right side of the crease during a power play 2:37 into the contest. Dallas pulled even less than five minutes later as Whitney buried a loose puck on the doorstep, but Duchene made a nifty move to get free above the left faceoff circle and made a cross-slot pass to Johnson, who beat Ellis from the right circle midway through the second for a 2-1 edge.
Whitney capped his two-goal performance during a man advantage with 2:41 left in period, ripping a shot past Giguere from the right circle. The Stars took their first lead of the game late in the third, when Sceviour received a feed from Rich Peverley and slid the puck between the pads of Giguere during a breakaway.
