Red Wings 2, Sharks 1 (SO): Damien Brunner scored the lone goal in the shootout and Jonas Gustavsson made 25 saves in his first start for Detroit as the visiting Red Wings edged San Jose.
Patrick Eaves tallied in regulation for Detroit, which won for only the second time in nine visits to HP Pavilion.
Logan Couture scored and Antti Niemi stopped 33 shots for the Sharks, who are 2-6-4 in their last 12 contests.
Neither team converted in the first round of the shootout and Gustavsson made a glove save on Patrick Marleau on San Jose's second-round attempt. Brunner raced in and beat Niemi to the glove side for his second goal in as many career shootout opportunities, and Ryane Clowe shot wide on the Sharks' last chance to seal the win for Detroit.
After two scoreless periods, San Jose took advantage of a turnover just inside Detroit's zone to take the lead. After Justin Abdelkader coughed up the puck near the blue line, captain Joe Thornton grabbed it and fed Couture, who fired a one-timer from the right faceoff circle just under the glove of Gustavsson at 4:49 of the third.
It took the Red Wings only 92 seconds to pull even. Defenseman Niklas Kronwall unleashed a slap shot from the blue line that glanced off a defender before hitting Eaves' skate and sneaking past Niemi.
