New York Mets top pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a strained right elbow.

Snydergaard, who plays for the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, was scheduled to be examined by team doctors in New York after being diagnosed with a flexor pronator strain.

Snydergaard could face Tommy John surgery, but the Mets characterized the injury is mild.

The 21-year-old is 5-2 with a 4.02 ERA in 10 starts with Las Vegas this season. He last pitched on Wednesday.

The Mets acquired Snydergaard from the Toronto Blue Jays as part of the R.A. Dickey trade in December 2012.
