Iowa routs Northwestern 70-50
Hawkeyes get first conference win of season
Iowa 70, Northwestern 50: Aaron White scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half and the Hawkeyes got 40 points from their bench while using a stifling defensive effort to earn a rare road win against the Wildcats.
Josh Oglesby scored 14 points and fellow reserve Melsahn Basabe added 11 for Iowa (12-5, 1-3 Big Ten), which snapped a season-high three-game losing streak. The Hawkeyes also stopped a four-game road skid against the Wildcats and won for just the second time in their last nine trips to Evanston.
Dave Sobolewski scored 14 points and Tre Demps added 10 off the bench for Northwestern (10-7, 1-3), which shot just 20.8 percent (5-for-24) from the field in the first half and went more than seven minutes without a field goal. The Wildcats shot slightly better in the second half but finished a season-worst 29.4 percent (15-for-51).
Neither team could generate much at the offensive end in the first 20 minutes, but the Hawkeyes warmed up late in the period and used a 14-4 run to take a 25-15 advantage to the locker room.
Another stretch of more than five minutes without a field goal crushed the Wildcats' slim hopes of a comeback. A dunk by White made it 61-40 with 7:24 left and the lead remained at 18 or more the rest of the way.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Hawkeyes improved to 22-0 over the past three seasons when holding their opponent under 60 points. … Iowa held a 39-28 edge on the boards with freshman Adam Woodbury leading the way with nine rebounds. … Northwestern leading scorer Reggie Hearn was held to six points on 2-of-6 shooting.
