Arizona Diamondbacks utility infielder Cliff Pennington was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a thumb injury and replaced on the roster by infielder Didi Gregorius.
The 29-year-old Pennington suffered a sprained thumb on a tag attempt during a May 27 game against the San Diego Padres.
In 33 games this season, Pennington is batting .243 with no home runs and six RBIs.
Gregorius was batting .310 for Triple-A Reno with three home runs and 25 RBIs in 57 games. He hit .373 in his last 15 games.
The 24-year-old Gregorius was with the Diamondbacks for their season-opening series in Australia before being sent to Reno. He has three years of major league experience wih the Cincinnati Reds and Diamondbacks, compiling a .252 batting average with seven homers and 30 RBIs. He started 97 games at shortstop for the Diamondbacks last season.
