Cubs hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo was fired Tuesday, replaced by 35-year-old James Rowson, who was promoted from minor-league hitting instructor to become interim hitting coach.

Jaramillo spent 15 seasons with the Rangers before he was hired by the Cubs before the 2010 season, during which time the team has had three different managers.

The Cubs entered Tuesday's series opener against the Tigers with a 20-40 record. They were 19th in the majors with a .247 batting average but 27th in on-base percentage (.304) and walks (151).
