Blue leads Marquette to victory in OT
Golden Eagles win fifth straight
Marquette 74, Pittsburgh 67 (OT): Vander Blue scored a season-high 22 points, including eight in overtime, as the visiting Golden Eagles edged the Panthers for their fifth straight victory.
Davante Gardner chipped in with 13 points and Jamil Wilson added 11 for Marquette (12-3, 3-0 Big East). The Golden Eagles did not trail in overtime after Lamar Patterson tied the game for Pittsburgh with a long 3-pointer at the final buzzer in regulation.
Pittsburgh (13-4, 1-3) lost second-leading scorer Tray Woodall with a concussion early into the game and leading scorer Talib Zanna had just three points on 1-for-9 shooting from the field. Patterson led the way with 22 points, James Robinson added 12 and Durand Johnson scored 10 for the Panthers.
Marquette turned the ball over with 20 seconds left in regulation to give Pittsburgh a chance to tie and Patterson was left alone at the top of the key. Blue made two free throws and Gardner scored inside as Marquette responded quickly in the extra period.
Woodall, averaging 11.4 points and 5.9 assists, collided with Marquette’s Derrick Wilson 3:30 into the game. Marquette shot 61 percent from the field in the first half - making five of its seven attempts from 3-point range - to build a 33-30 advantage at intermission.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Marquette’s third-leading scorer Junior Cadougan left with an apparent ankle injury in the first half, returned briefly and missed the entire second half. . … Pittsburgh was just 13-for-26 from the free-throw line, including 2-for-7 in overtime. … Marquette’s 3-0 start is its second best in the Big East. The Golden Eagles began 9-0 in 2008-09.
