The Kansas City Royals traded outfielder Melky Mesa and right-handed pitcher PJ Walters to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday for cash considerations.
The Blue Jays were looking for depth at the Triple-A level and starting center fielder Colby Rasmus is out indefinitely with a hamstring injury. Mesa can play all three outfield positions.
If Mesa is needed on the big-league club to fill a spot, it could open the door for the Blue Jays having two Melkys in their outfield as Melky Cabrera starts in left. Both players were originally signed by the New York Yankees but never played on the same club at the same time.
Mesa, 27, had a batting line of .284/.346/.527 with five home runs in 23 games with Triple-A Omaha. He went 6-for-15 in eight games with the Yankees from 2012-13.
