Madison, Green Bay Make Pitches To Host WIAA State Basketball Tourneys

Kohl Center Availability In Question Because Of Hockey

The city of Madison could lose the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state basketball tournament as Green Bay puts on a full court press to host the games.

Representatives from both Madison and Green Bay made presentations to the WIAA Board of Control on Wednesday in Stevens Point, hoping to host the annual tournaments at their facilities.

"We think the (Resch Center) works. We're in Titletown USA. How could you not want to play championships in Titletown? The Packers have been very supportive as part of our presentation, and they're willing to do things to help make it a better event," said Ken Wachter, president of Green Bay-based PMI Entertainment Group. "We feel good about the arena side, the hotel side, the community and even the Green Bay Packers."

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin, Tim Wise, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's athletic department, and Deb Archer from the Greater Madison Convention and Visitor's Bureau, among others, were there to argue the case for the capital city.

"There is just no substitute for going to state. And when you say 'going to state,' it means only one thing, and that means playing on the hardwood of the state university," said Soglin.

Making matters complicated for Madison's pitch is the fact the UW's Kohl Center can't be guaranteed for the high school tournaments. The Big Ten is considering changing its playoff model for its new hockey conference, which means the Kohl Center may be needed for hockey the same weekends of the WIAA tournaments.

It's now up to the WIAA and its Board of Controls to decide if the tournament should stay where it's been since the 1920s or move to new surroundings in the shadow of Lambeau Field.

"These two events which we have to look at as life blood events for our organization. The boys state basketball tournament helps provide the other 19 events that don't make enough to sustain themselves," said Dave Anderson, executive director of the WIAA.

"The board's never really had to make a decision like this before. We don't have any precedent to follow to move a signature event from one venue to another, so we have to take a lot into consideration," said Board of Control President Mark Gobler. "It's almost overwhelming."

The board expects to have a final decision at its next monthly meeting the first week of March in Madison.
