UW Modifies Carry-In Policies For Badgers Games
Security Won't Allow Any Bag Larger Than A Piece Of Paper

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin Badgers will take the field at Camp Randall on Saturday, and with the new season comes new policies on what fans can bring to home football games. The University of Wisconsin-Madison said the changes are aimed at making it easier for fans to understand the policy that went into effect last season.Wisconsin football fans have different ideas of what it means to be prepared on game day."You might have some snacks in (your bag), maybe a newspaper, something about the game maybe," said football fan Jason Simon."It's so expensive to buy food and stuff there, so that would definitely be my thing," said fan Hannah Smith.Officials said that whatever fans bring to the stadium, it needs to fit in a bag no bigger than 8.5 by 11 inches, or the size of a sheet of printer paper."We tossed that around, different sizes, and we thought that that was easy to remember for people. Everybody has a piece of paper lying around, and also all the security guards working at the gates have some paper that they can measure the bag," said Lt. Jason Whitney, of the UW-Madison Police Department. The policy went into effect last October following a Homeland Security advisory.
The latest tweak means Simon's bag, which is about the size of a laptop computer, would not be allowed in.Smith's purse is just smaller than the piece of paper and would be allowed.Others, like Jacque Le, said they won't even bother with carry-ins."I don't really bring anything. I bring my ticket, and my ID and some money," said Le.Even Badgers receiver David Gilreath found it surprising that the bag he carried on State Street on Thursday morning was too big."Yeah it does, but I don't know what I could fit in here. What else could I bring?" said Gilreath.Gilreath will be focused on having a big game, not carry-ins. However, for fans to have an easy day, police said they should leave the big bags at home."We don't provide any type of storage lockers or anything like that so they'll be encouraged to bring it back to their vehicle or back to their residence," Whitney said. The policy also says that all bags and spectators are subject to search.Among the items permitted are items related to a medical condition and folding chairbacks not more than 16 inches wide. For more details on the carry-in policy and a list of what's allowed at Camp Randall, click here (PDF Format). For fans traveling to the game Saturday, which kicks off at 11 a.m., road construction on main arteries into campus could case some headaches.City officials said drivers should watch for construction zones on University Avenue between Segoe Road and Shorewood Boulevard and expect some traffic delays.Old Middleton Road between Capitol Avenue and Countryside Lane will be closed to through traffic.Drivers should also expect delays on the Beltline as the eastbound ramp to Park Street is closed.Officials are asking that travelers plan ahead and allow for some extra time to get to the stadium. The University Avenue and Old Middleton Road projects will continue through late October.
