Pitching Will Be Key To Success

MADISON, Wis. -- If you're on the Milwaukee Brewers and you start spring training, you'd figure you're going to be working out in nice warm, sunny conditions in Arizona. Monday that was not the case when manager Ken Macha brought his players out for a morning workout. It was a cold, windy, nasty rainy day, with temperatures in the 50s."The way our days are factored here it will be no problem," said Macha. "I'd rather have it rain now, early rather than three days before the season starts and now you're shuffling and guys need innings and stuff so we can make an adjustment."Temperatures in Maryvale, Ariz., are expected to climb up to near 70 degrees starting on Tuesday. As the temperatures start to warm up, so does the excitement for the season to begin."(General Manager) Doug (Melvin) did a great job of going out and getting some pitchers," said Macha. "We've got a bunch of them here, a lot of candidates, some guys with some big league experience."The Brewers team has high hopes for the season, just two years after making the playoffs. That late-season success was credited to a top notch pitching staff, led by former Brewers Ben Sheets and CC Sabathia. The Brewers are hoping a pair of veteran free agents will provide a spark to the starting rotation. Left-handers Randy Wolf and Doug Davis provide that big league experience and the Brewers are hoping for big things this year from Yovani Gallardo."I'm excited about seeing those guys get out on the mound so a couple of ticks upward with our pitching, play a little better defense," said Macha. "We need to add 10 more wins to be in the hunt. I can't see that not being a possibility."
