Packer Fans Torn At Favre's Return To Lambeau

Vikings Best Packers Sunday Night

Sunday was the day Green Bay Packers fans had dreaded since first hearing that erstwhile quarterback Brett Favre would become a Minnesota Viking. The future Hall of Famer returned to Lambeau Field leading another team.

And as the spectacle finally hit the field -- the team's onetime franchise player dressed in the colors of its greatest rival -- fans wanted to give Favre a piece of their mind.

Within the sea of green and gold in Lambeau Field, onlookers found there are actually three teams to root for or against: the Packers, the Vikings and Favre.

"This is my lovely niece who is no longer a member of our family," joked Jim McGinnity, of Green Bay.

"I like the Packers, but I will always love Brett Favre," said Ali McGinnity, of Milwaukee.

Given the drama of this somewhat dysfunctional relationship between Favre and Packers fans, there's plenty to say to the man many people consider a traitor.

"I'd tell him I loved him up until last year or two years ago," said Josh Jones, of Tempe, Ariz., "I'll give him a standing ovation, but as soon as the game starts, it's over. He's the enemy."

"I'm always a Favre fan. I'm not one of those guys that is going to hate him because he left. He's brought us too much," said John Demeuse.

Even those who came from across the pond have something to say to Favre.

"I think he'll play his best, but I think he's going to lose so I probably wouldn't speak to him," said Martin Froggatt, who came from the United Kingdom to see the matchup.

Many fans said that they're not sure who they're rooting for.

"Thirteen years ago, my auntie came to America on holiday and when she came back, she gave me this shirt as a Christmas present," said Chris Harrington, another British Packer fan. "And until a week ago, I thought Green Bay was in Florida."

The Pandora's box that is Favre feelings is about as big as Lambeau itself.

"You know we were there. We were there in the bad times, we were there in the good times," said Matt Lutsey of Atlanta. "I think there's a lot of people here that don't get any press that Ted Thompson made the right decision.

"If Captain Wishy Washy wants to go 'maybe I'm going to play, maybe I'm not,' this is a football team. And we are Packer fans and we are not Brett Favre fans," he said.

But now that the game is over, some fans could be a little more cordial.

"I would tell him congratulations on a job well done again and I'm glad you came back. Doesn't matter where you're playing. We'll be watching for you to play," said Don Zimerman of Anamosa, Iowa.

Even those Favre haters had to admit that No. 4 didn't have a bad game and conceded that the Packers have some work to do.

Many said that to give up this grudge completely is going to take more than one Sunday evening to do.
