Clay Runs For 123 Yards

MADISON, Wis. -- John Clay ran for 123 yards and three scores, as the University of Wisconsin Badgers blanked the Purdue Boilermakers, 37-0, in a Big Ten tilt at Camp Randall Stadium.The Badgers (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) ran for 266 yards as a team, which accounted for 70 percent of the team's total offense. With the ground game churning out chunks of yardage, quarterback Scott Tolzien finished with just 87 yards on 6- of-13 passing.Joey Elliott had an abysmal day under center for the Boilermakers (3-6, 2-3), who saw their modest two-game win streak come to an end. Elliott completed just 5-of-23 passes for 59 yards and an interception.Wisconsin marched 80 yards in 11 plays on the game's opening drive, which Clay capped with a one-yard touchdown plunge at the 9:27 mark of the first quarter.The Badgers took a 10-0 lead on a 32-yard field goal by Philip Welch in the opening minute of the second quarter.Clay gave the Badgers a 17-0 lead with another one-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter, which was set up by an interception deep in Purdue territory.The Wisconsin defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, and freshman David Gilbert blocked the punt, which was recovered by Aaron Henry recovered for a touchdown to push the margin to 24-0.Clay's third touchdown of the day came at the 13:19 mark of the third quarter, after he recovered his own fumble in the end zone following a four-yard run.Welch added a pair of field goals (42, 22) to account for the final margin.The Purdue offense was held to just 141 total yards for the game. For the Badgers, who are now bowl eligible, the shutout was their first in a conference game since a 59-0 win over Indiana 10 years ago.
