MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The top two female finishers in last Sunday's Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee have been disqualified.

Cassie Peller crossed the finish line in just over three hours, but she has been disqualified because during the race, a friend gave her a water bottle between official aid stations.

"I'm disappointed that it was taken away from me for something that I think is a little trivial and something that probably half of the people in the race did," Peller said.

The second place finisher, Jennifer Goebel, wore an iPod for part of the race, which disqualified her.

"It is disappointing because it's nice to think that you won, but just to see that my time won't even be in results now is disappointing," Goebel said.

But Kris Hinrichs, race director of the Lakefront Marathon, said it's the responsibility of the runners to follow the rules.

"These young women were running at an elite level and have competed in other events, the Chicago marathon or other similar events, and they really ought to have known what the rules were," Hinrichs said.

That makes the third woman who crossed the finish line, Corina Canitz, a 42-year-old mother of four from Brookfield, the winner.
