Brunette's OT Tally Lifts Minnesota To "Wild" Home-Opener Win

(Sports Network) - Andrew Brunette scored on the power play, 3:08 into overtime, and Minnesota rallied from a three-goal deficit to post a thrilling 4-3 win over Anaheim, as the Wild continued their amazing stretch in home openers.

Mikko Koivu, Petr Sykora and Eric Belanger all scored in the third period for the Wild, who have won eight straight home openers and have never lost their first game at Xcel Energy Center, going 8-0 with a tie. The victory ties Washington for the longest active NHL winning streak in home openers.

It also gave new Wild coach Todd Richards his first NHL victory.

"For 40 minutes we weren't very good," said Richards. "That second period really got away from us. And I think the players felt that way too. But they certainly made up for it in the third."

Niklas Backstrom made 16 saves for the Wild, who played spectacular defense, allowing a total of two shots over the game's final 25 minutes.

Forward Martin Havlat, who signed to a six-year contract with the Wild on July 1, made his regular season home debut and had three assists, bringing his total to 400 career points.

Saku Koivu, Joffrey Lupul and Evgeny Artyukhin scored second-period goals for the Ducks.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere, in his first start of the season, made 28 saves. Jonas Hiller was in net for Anaheim's 4-1 season-opening loss to San Jose, but Giguere was dominant between the pipes on Tuesday before faltering in the third period.

"How many penalties did we have to kill? You can't have success and defend a lead when you're in the penalty box," said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle. "That got pretty frustrating there at the end. The only positive is that we got one point."

Ryan Whitney and James Wisniewski each had a pair of assists for the Ducks, but it was Wisniewski's roughing penalty on a punch to Kyle Brodziak that put the Wild on the power play in overtime.

Brunette took the initial shot, along the goal line's right side, but Giguere came up with the save. The rebound off a Belanger shot went to nearly the same spot in low from the right side, and Brunette roofed it for his second goal of the season.

Lupul scored 4:57 into the middle stanza on a deflection, and Artyukhin's goal just over two minutes later made it 2-0. Saku Koivu's tally, at 10:56 on the power play on a shot from the right circle, moved the Ducks to a three-goal lead.

Mikko Koivu's power-play marker at 6:29 of the third and Sykora's goal nearly six minutes later had the Wild knocking on the door.

Belanger then tied the game on the power play with 2:13 remaining in regulation on a quick shot from the right circle as the puck squeezed between Giguere's pads.

Game Notes

Wild left wing Pierre-Marc Bouchard was pulled from the lineup due to recurring headaches...The Wild have been fast starters as of late, going 23-8-3 in October since 2006. At Xcel Energy Center, the Wild are even better, with a 15-2-1 mark at home in that span...This marked the fourth time Saku and Mikko Koivu have faced each another during the regular season. Before Tuesday, Saku held the edge over his younger brother, having won two of the three games as a member of the Montreal Canadiens.
