Fielder Homers As Brewers Top Cubs

Posted: 10:53 pm CDT September 23,2009

(Sports Network) - Prince Fielder smacked a two-run homer, and Chris Narveson tossed a solid 5 2/3 innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Chicago Cubs, 3-2, to avoid a three-game sweep at Miller Park.

Jody Gerut hit a solo homer for the Brewers, who have won six of their last eight games. Ryan Braun went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the victors.

Narveson (2-0) gave up one run on four hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts to take the win. This was just his third start of the season. Trevor Hoffman picked up his 35th save of the year.

"Pretty impressive outing for Narveson. I thought his changeup and curveball were very effective. He had good command of all his pitches," Brewers manager Ken Macha said of Narveson.

Jeff Samardzija belted his first career homer, which was also his first hit in the majors, for the Cubs, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Bobby Scales drove in the other run. Jeff Baker went 2-for-4 with a run scored in defeat.

Samardzija (1-3) lasted five-plus frames in the start, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk to take the loss. The former Notre Dame football player was making his second career start.

"It felt good, my arm felt good and I made some good pitches," Samardzija said. "I have a lot of respect for the front office, for those guys giving me a few shots this year. I haven't pitched that great and for them to give me a start this late in the year was a great opportunity I didn't want to slip away."

The Cubs failed to score after putting their first two men on base in the top of the third. Reed Johnson led off with a double and Geovany Soto followed with a single, but Narveson retired the next three batters to end the threat.

In the bottom half of the inning, Gerut grounded out to strand men on first and second.

Fielder's two-run homer in the fourth broke a scoreless tie. Braun led off with a single to left and crossed the plate when Fielder deposited a Samardzija offering over the wall in left.

Samardzija brought Chicago within one when he led off the top of the sixth with a homer to right. However, Gerut's leadoff blast to right in the home half put the Brewers back up by two.

"I just went up there swinging and the ball found my bat. I probably should have slowed down and enjoyed it more," Samardzija said of his home run.

The Cubs scored a run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 3-2. David Weathers started the frame on the hill for Milwaukee and gave up a single to Baker, who scored on pinch-hitter Scales' double to left.

Hoffman worked around a one-out single in the top of the ninth to secure the victory for Milwaukee.
