Quentin, White Sox Crush Royals

Posted: 1:47 am CDT September 22, 2009

(Sports Network) - Carlos Quentin went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, and Jake Peavy was effective in five innings during his White Sox debut, as Chicago crushed the Kansas City Royals, 13-3, in the middle installment of a three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field.

Peavy (1-0), who was acquired at the non-waiver trade deadline from the San Diego Padres, gave up three runs on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks to get his first win in a White Sox uniform. The 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner had been sidelined since early June due to a partially torn tendon in his right ankle. He was hurt again during a minor league rehab appearance on August 24, which set back his timetable for a return.

Paul Konerko went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, three runs scored, and two runs batted in for the White Sox, who snapped a three-game skid to pull to within 5 1/2 games of the AL Central-leading Tigers. Alexei Ramirez and Jermaine Dye each had a pair of hits, two runs scored, and two RBI. Alex Rios went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the victors.

Dusty Hughes (0-1) lasted just 4 1/3 frames, giving up four runs -- three earned -- on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks to take loss in his first MLB start. The Royals' left-handed rookie September callup took the place of Kyle Davies in the rotation. Davies had been scheduled to start but was officially scratched Friday with a minor oblique issue.

Billy Butler hit a solo homer for the Royals, who won, 11-0, in the series opener. Alex Gordon and Yuniesky Betancourt had an RBI apiece in defeat.

A.J. Pierzynski's RBI single in the first gave the White Sox an early edge.

Kansas City responded with two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Alberto Callaspo singled and Miguel Olivo walked with one out. Gordon followed with a run-scoring base hit to right. Olivo scored when Betancourt laid down a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt.

Butler's solo blast to right in the top of the third gave the Royals a two-run margin. Chicago cut the deficit to one when Konerko smacked a solo homer to left in the bottom half.

Rios tied the tilt in the fourth with an RBI single, and Quentin belted a grand slam in the fifth to give Chicago a 7-3 lead. Pierzynski went down on strikes before Yasuhiko Yabuta took over on the hill for Hughes. Konerko walked, Ramirez singled, and Dye walked to load the bases. Quentin stepped to the plate and cleared the bases when he deposited a Yabuta offering over the wall in left.

The White Sox turned the tilt into a rout with a six-run eighth inning. Three singles started the inning, with Jayson Nix's base hit scoring Rios. Chicago later loaded the bases with one out after a walk, and Konerko followed with an RBI single. Ramirez then knocked in two more with a ground-rule double, and Dye capped the inning with a two-run single.

Game Notes

The White Sox lead the season series with Kansas City, 9-8...The Royals had won four of five coming into Saturday...The White Sox went 7-for-17 with runners in scoring position, while KC went 1-for-2 with RISP.
