Zambrano Collects First Win Since July As Cubs Sweep Pirates

Posted: 6:26 pm CDT September 9, 2009

(Sports Network) - Micah Hoffpauir homered and knocked in two runs and Koyie Hill added two RBI, as the Chicago Cubs downed Pittsburgh, 8-5, in the finale of a three-game set from PNC Park.

Ryan Theriot, Jeff Baker, Bobby Scales and Mike Fontenot added an RBI apiece for the Cubs, who swept the series and have won four of five.

"Our guys swung the bat today. It was a good offensive day for us," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella.

Carlos Zambrano (8-6) went six innings for the win, his first since July 22, and yielded two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Ronny Cedeno hit a three-run homer for the Pirates, losers in 12 of their last 13 games. Kevin Hart (4-6) was tagged in the loss for six hits and four runs over five frames, walking six and fanning only three.

"Even though it wasn't a pretty outing, it was encouraging. We just have to get that arm slot in a position to get him more swings and misses on the fastball," Pirates manager John Russell said of Hart's performance.

Ahead by four in the eighth, the Cubs extended their lead to 8-2 on Hoffpauir's sacrifice fly and Fontenot's single up the middle.

Pittsburgh rallied in the home half, as two-out walks issued to Brandon Moss and Steve Pearce by Kevin Gregg preceded Cedeno's three-run homer which brought the Bucs back within three runs.

Carlos Marmol shut the door in the ninth, however, setting down the side in order for his 11th save.

Chicago picked up a run in the first on Baker's sac fly with one out and the bases loaded, then extended its lead in the second on Theriot's RBI single.

Scales' fielder's choice with runners on the corners and one out in the third scored Hoffpauir for a 3-0 Cubs advantage, then the Bucs struck for a pair in the home fourth on Andrew McCutchen's two-out, two-run double.

Hoffpauir began the fifth with a solo shot, and a two-run single from Hill in the seventh put the visitors on top 6-2.
