Fielder Homers In 12th To Help Brewers Avoid Sweep Against Giants

Posted: 6:38 pm CDT September 6, 2009

(Sports Network) - Prince Fielder went 2-for-6 and belted the game-winning homer in the bottom of the 12th inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers avoided a three-game sweep with a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Miller Park.

After pitching a scoreless 11th, Merkin Valdez (2-1) stayed on to pitch the home half of the 12th for the Giants. Valdez got Ryan Braun to go down swinging, but Fielder stepped to the plate and launched an 0-1 slider over the wall in right for the win.

"That time of day the shadows make it tough. Your just trying to make contact," Fielder said of his homer.

Casey McGehee went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Brewers, who had lost four of five coming into Sunday. Braun had a pair of hits for the victors.

Braden Looper was effective in seven frames, giving up one run on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout for Milwaukee. Mitch Stetter (4-1) tossed a scoreless top of the 12th to get the win.

Pablo Sandoval drove in the lone run for the Giants, who finished 3-3 on a six-game road trip. Randy Winn and Edgar Renteria each had two hits in defeat.

Jonathan Sanchez was solid in six innings, allowing one run on three hits with nine strikeouts and three walks for San Francisco, which fell two games back of Colorado for the NL wild card spot.

"Were playing a lot of close games. There were some great plays on defense, especially the triple play," Sanchez said.

The Giants drew first blood with a run in the first inning. Eugenio Velez led off with a double to left and scored two batters later when Sandoval stroked a base hit up the middle.

Milwaukee failed to score after putting men on first and second in the second. Fielder led off with a double and Jason Kendall walked following two quick outs. Sanchez got Jody Gerut to go down looking to end the threat.

Both starting pitchers were solid through the middle frames.

San Fran put its first two men on base in the top of the sixth. Winn and Garko laced back-to-back singles, but the scoring chance came to a sudden halt. Aaron Rowand grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play to end the frame. It was just the fifth triple play in Brewers history and the first since April 16, 1999 against the Cubs.

"We played solid defense. I didn't realize it was a triple play until it was over," Fielder said.

The Brewers plated a run in the sixth to deadlock the tilt at one. Felipe Lopez walked and Braun singled to put men on first and second with one out. Following a Fielder pop out, McGehee stroked an RBI single to left.

Milwaukee stranded men on first and second in the seventh and left runners on the corners in the eighth.

Neither team scored in the ninth, sending the tilt into extras. San Francisco failed to score after putting men on first and second with nobody out in the top of the 10th. The Brewers stranded the bases loaded in the home half, as Sandoval made a nice diving catch to end the inning.
