Haeger Helps Dodgers Blank Cubs

Posted: 11:47 pm CDT August 22, 2009

(Sports Network) - Charlie Haeger threw seven-plus solid innings to help the Los Angeles Dodgers take a 2-0 win over the Chicago Cubs in the third of four games.

Haeger (1-1) gave up just three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts while Casey Blake and Matt Kemp added solo home runs for the Dodgers, who have won three straight and four of five.

"We haven't given out pitchers a lot to work with," said Dodgers manager Joe Torre. "We've been struggling at the plate and what we've scored has been enough. Haeger was great. We're playing well when we don't have a lot of wiggle room."

Ted Lilly (9-8) was strong in the start as he gave up just two runs on three hits with five strikeouts over six innings of work. Derrek Lee went 2- for-4 in the loss.

"We're having a hard time scoring," said Lee. "We're not swinging the bats. We need to give ourselves more opportunities. We're not playing good and it's a bad spell right now."

The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the second as Kemp cracked a shot over the wall in left for his 18th home run of the season.

In the fourth, Blake made it a 2-0 game with his two-out, solo homer to left- center, his 15th round-tripper of the season.

Chicago, meanwhile, was having its offense stymied for the second straight game as, despite, putting a runner on base in each of the first five innings, the team had just one base hit and were unable to get a runner past second.

In the sixth, Aramis Ramirez got the second hit of the game for the Cubs as he punched a two-out single to center, but Kosuke Fukudome grounded out to end the frame.

A leadoff single by Jeff Baker in the seventh was wasted as Geovany Soto flied out, Aaron Miles struck out and Mike Fontenot flied out to strand him there.

In the eighth, the Cubs had their best scoring opportunity of the game. San Fuld led off with a walk and, after Jonathan Broxton took the mound, Milton Bradley struck out. Lee followed with a double to right to put the tying run in scoring position, but Ramirez lined out to first and Fukudome struck out to end the inning.

George Sherrill closed out the game in the ninth as he worked around a one-out single to Soto and a two-out walk to Alfonso Soriano to pick up his 21st save of the season.
