Cedeno, Pirates Sweep Brewers

Posted: 11:02 pm CDT August 19, 2009

(Sports Network) - Ronny Cedeno hit a two-run homer, as the Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers after taking a 3-1 decision at PNC Park.

Delwyn Young had a pair of doubles and an RBI for the Pirates, who last swept the Brewers from May 29-June 1, 2006 in a four-game set in the Steel City. Pittsburgh had dropped 12 of its previous 13 coming into the series.

Paul Maholm (7-7) picked up the win after allowing one run on eight hits over 7 2/3 innings. He was 0-3 with a 7.42 earned run average in his last five starts entering Wednesday's tilt. Mike Capps registered his 22nd save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

"Overall, I got a bunch of ground balls which to me means my sinker was moving like it was supposed to," Maholm said. "I was able to throw my curveball early in the count, later in the count and just get ahead of guys."

Ryan Braun had an RBI single, while Mike Cameron and Alcides Escobar each had two hits apiece for Milwaukee, which has lost four straight.

Yovani Gallardo (11-10) turned in a solid six innings, but was saddled with the loss. The right-hander surrendered three runs on four hits, struck out six and walked three.

"As much as I hate to say it, the Pirates played some good baseball in this series," Cameron said. "They got a few breaks here and there, and we didn't find any breaks. They turned a lot of double plays and were able to do a lot of things right."

Ryan Doumit walked to lead off the second and crossed the plate later in the inning when Cedeno cracked a two-run homer to left, giving the Pirates an early lead. Young's RBI double in the third put the Bucs up 3-0.

Cameron doubled with two outs in the sixth and came into score on Braun's base hit to get the Brewers on the board. Maholm gave up a two-out single to Cameron in the eighth and was lifted for Joel Hanrahan, who retired Braun to end the inning. Capps closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning.
